From the course: After Effects Guru: Keying with Keylight
What is keying?
- Keying is a special compositing effect that happens when we take a part of a video and make it transparent. We can choose this part of the video based on color, luminance or even a mask. When we choose the part of the video to be made transparent, based on color this is known as Chroma Keying. Usually we use green as the color to key because it is the easiest color for the software to process as the green channel is the strongest one of the channels. Therefore, the one that will contain the clearest information and be easier to key than the other two channels, which are of course, red and blue. If you are ever curious on what green color you need to use, this is very simple. In RGB, the color 02550, so the ideal green color is pure green channel. No red or blue channel mixed in there. Of course, this is very seldom accomplished. Some shots needs to use blue instead of green. Maybe the talent needs to be dressed in green, like the Green Giant or maybe some of the props they will use…
