The global mindset
= In this global economy, the adage it's a small world is more accurate than ever. And to operate a successful business, you need to think globally, embracing diversity of cultures and diversity of thought. A global mindset is defined by the Thunderbird School of Global Management as a set of attributes that helps people work better with individuals and organizations unlike themselves. It is the ability to understand the similarites and differences among cultures and not be paralyzed by the differences. Employees with a global mindset can see and work towards making the bigger picture a reality. They embrace conflict management as opposed to avoiding conflict. They approach problems with a process mindset rather than relying solely on organizational structure changes. Employees with a growth mindset believe that change ushers in opportunity and they practice continual learning. HR pros should promote a commitment to a global mindset because there are many benefits to the organization. With a global mindset, your organization can take advantage of business opportunities they would have otherwise missed. These opportunities are sometimes overlooked because no one on the team had the skill or understanding of what products or services would be of interest to consumers in the new market. Additionally, in new markets it is important to understand local cultural norms. The company's ability to integrate those norms into daily operations allows new products or services to be adopted into the local market. This also increases operational efficiency, which means the company can get their new products and services to the market faster. A global mindset also allows the organization to become more proactive with respect to positioning itself as offering something unique or of more value than their competitors, and in terms of benchmarking, their new product offerings, or innovation. The SHRM-CP exam is designed to identify how you would encourage and reward global and cultural effectiveness in your organization. This begins with understanding what a global mindset is and how it benefits your company.
