- [Voiceover] Hi. I'm William Lidwell. And this is the Universal Principals of Design in this movie the "Mafa Effect" or the beauty of being average. The deleterious effects of long-term drug use on facial appearance are well known. Sagging skin, sunken features, asymmetric expressions, and so on. To highlight these effects, presumably as a deterrent to drug use, Recovery.org sponsored a website called "Drug Mugs: The Average Faces of Drug Abuse". The site features composite images created from mug shots of men and women arrested for marijuana, alcohol and methamphetamine use with the requisite scary statistics about drug use and prison sentencing. It's a cool idea and the site is well crafted. There's just one problem. By creating composite images in this way, they unwittingly averaged out the kinds of unsightly idiosyncrasies they sought to highlight.
